I don't usually write about Vivien for several reasons, some of them personal, and some because there are already incredible people who have delved far more into Vivien Leigh than I have, or at this point, could even imagine doing. So, often I quietly and personally connect with Vivien in the theater or at home through her films.
To say Vivien has had a profound impact on my life would be putting it mildly. The first time I saw Vivien Leigh in Gone With the Wind, was in 1986, 26 years ago. I was 8 years old and it was at the very moment of the scene below. I was immediately and most intensely captured by her beauty, charm, and energy. I spent many childhood, preteen, and teen days imagining what it would be like to be Vivien and to have lived her life.
I know, now, that her life was not without pain and anguish. But, her incredible strength has only fueled my admiration for her.
I have seen all of her films and the great films are absolutely timeless. She is one of the most incredible actresses to ever be on the screen. Watching her work takes every bit of my energy because from the first shot to the last she reaches out beyond time and the camera, grabs a hold of me, and doesn't let go.
Here's to you, Ms. Vivien Leigh, on the 99th anniversary of your birth. You, through your talent, dedication, drive, grace, charm, and elegance, have created generations of new fans, inspired people to push onward through trials and tribulations, and left an impact throughout the world. You are permanently imprinted in my life and I cannot imagine having lived my life without that defining moment 26 years ago!
Happy 99th birthday in honor of you, your legacy, and your fans throughout the world!
